When Bud Williams invited us to Spokane, USA, to attend his Marketing school, I really had no idea the impact it would have on me or the Australian livestock industry. After day one Rod, Jim and I sat in our hotel room that night in lively discussion as we realized the profits that could be realized using Bud’s principles in Australia. I have been both a cattle breeder and cattle & sheep trader and as I look back I wish I had these skills when I first started out.

After meeting Bud Williams and learning his unique way of interpreting markets I realised a lot of the mistakes I made as a breeder were not as a result of the market but in spite of it.

Then as a trader I had set certain limits and parameters that were based on what I thought the market was going to do.

If I still had those limits in place today I wouldn’t have made any money over the past 5 years. I couldn’t afford to do that and I don’t know many who can.

When we attended Bud’s school he made the statement that with only 100 head of cattle we could afford to pay someone to look after those cattle and nothing else and still make a profit.

So when we arrived home I purchased 100 light steers ran them on a given area, applied Bud’s marketing techniques and netted just over $29 000.00 in 12 months.
